MODIFICATION OF TITANIUM IMPLANTS
PROPERTIES BY SURFACE ENGINEERING
METHODS

SUMMARY
Titanium and its alloys regarding to their physico-chemical properties and good biocompatibility with human
tissues are widely applied in medicine. Their long-term use as implant material is limited by low wear
resistance and releasing the elements from the alloy to the surrounding implant environment. However this
limitation is of lower degree than for e.g. an austenitic stainless steel or CoCrMo alloy. Surface engineering
methods are applied to improve biomaterial useful properties of titanium alloys and their biocompatibility.
These methods are aimed to modify microstructure, phase and chemical composition, and surface topography.
The paper presents structure and properties of the surface layers Ti3P + Ti2Ni type produced on Ti6Al4V alloy
for bone implants application in medicine..

Keywords
Ttitanium alloys, titanium phosphide, hybrid methods, bone implants.
